„about food and habitation – a matter of taste“
a serving furniture for the Hotel Gutkowski, Syracuse, Sicily
To meet at the set table,
to meet at the fire,
to meet in the kitchen during a party…
The hearth, heart of the home, center of the family,
place of community, of sharing and participating,
supporting and being supported.
So: for the hotel a furniture that is about to be
a set table, a host, life and soul of a small community.
A gesture, reminding the guest to be welcome,
a linking with the place,
a serving furniture.
For a stranger a hotel represents a host. It is a place, that is meant to be a
domicil for a short while. It connects the guest with his new surrounding.
The regional food that is served in the hotel strengthens and deepens this
connection eminently. Food assembles the identity of the place: information
about the character of the ground, the water, the special light, even the
temperament of the cook.
By the gesture of serving, the host shares all of this with his guest and offers a
whole world to him. The stranger is invited to partake of it, he may taste and
unscramble. Through food the land reveals itself. And we are attracted by the
play of the familiar and the foreign.

on the doors . brazen fittings . a door is kept open by a fire drencher .
. behind: the roof-deck . the sea on the left . unsettled and bluegrey .
. beclouded . a landscape of roofs . tiles . powdery soft colours . blue
chalky walls . the sooty black chimney is silhouetted against the sky .
. beautyful with the blue of the walls . clay pots with succulents and cacti .
. unspoilt in forms and colours . warm stone under naked feet . cool
wind and goose skin . clouds are becoming even greyer
. down at the entrance . blue painted wooden floor . yellow star in yellow
circle . books and newspapers on a glasstable, the picture of the vergine
annunciata . a painted wooden sailing boat . powdery blue again, even in the
photographs . muted atmosphere . feeling calm .
